Hey-Bey and his mom are tight, watch boxing together
Because one Mother’s Day story isn’t enough, in Sunday’s Washington Post, Avis Thomas-Lester beautifully describes the tight bond Darrius Heyward-Bey shares with his mother, Vivian, in a way that only a man with a similarly hyphenated last name could. We highly recommend you read the entire story, but here are a few selections to whet your appetite:
- Mother and son were nibbling chicken wings on the living room floor and watching the fight the night that Mike Tyson nibbled Evander Holyfield’s ear in 1997. That’s love.
- When Darrius announced his intentions to run away from home at the age of 6, his mother helped him pack, and even made him a peanut butter and jelly sandwich for the road. “She told me to watch out crossing the street, then she closed the door,” Darrius recalled. Then he ran 40 yards down the block in 4.3 seconds flat.
- Heyward-Bey’s barber has a picture of Darrius posted on a mirror at his station next to pictures of Serena Williams and Jesus.
- Darrius hasn’t let the prospect of joining a new tax bracket affect his spending; $300 on a pair of headphones is his biggest purchase since the draft.

If Tim Alderson’s subsequent starts are anything like his Double-A debut, he won’t be hanging around Norwich for long. Alderson struck out 10 and didn’t allow a hit in 6 2/3 shutout innings. The Defenders won 3-0. CT Defenders
You’ve probably seen the video clip of San Jose State standout and Chicago Bears draft pick Jarron Gilbert jumping out of a pool. Well, if you believe his Twitter feed, Dallas Cowboys rookie linebacker Jason Williams didn’t just see it, he replicated it. In other news, skeptical YouTube commenter uCaNtCme11 is crying conspiracy: “too bad that he walked backwards to the edge of the pool, then jumped in, and they played the clip backwards…” Fan House
