A cricket league’s abrewin’

The USA Cricket Association plans to launch a Twenty20 Premier League similar to the Indian Premier League (go Delhi Daredevils!) in the United States no later than 2011. “We are confident that, with the right partners, the USA can host a world-class Premier League which will fill grounds and attract massive television and online audiences,” said the USACA’s commercial adviser Nigel Rushman. Didn’t they say the same thing about the WNBA?
Any cricket league in the United States would almost certainly include a team in the Bay Area, as the sport is already rather popular in these parts. Abrar Ahmad, a co-founder of the Bay Area Cricket Alliance, is one of the US Cricket Association’s selectors helping to form a national team that could attend next year’s World Cup. We’d embrace a new league. All we ask is that the first day of the regular season be held the day after baseball’s All-Star game so that we’d have something to watch for a change.
