Report: A’s trade Holliday for Bay Area big boy Brett Wallace
ESPN is reporting that the A’s have completed a trade that will send Matt Holliday to the St. Louis Cardinals in exchange for third baseman Brett Wallace, outfielder Shane Peterson, and pitcher Clayton Mortensen. The centerpiece of the deal is the 22-year-old Wallace, a power-hitting third baseman who was hitting .293 with six homers and 19 RBI at Triple-A Memphis this season. The 2007 and 2008 Pac-10 Player of the Year at Arizona State, Wallace was selected 13th overall by the Cardinals in the 2008 draft.
The initial reaction to the deal at Athletics Nation is mostly positive, though many readers have expressed concerns over Wallace’s weight and fielding deficiencies. There were plenty of good retorts, however. Witness: “Pablo Sandoval is fat…Cecil and Prince Fielder are fat…” Yes, they are.
Here’s a little bit more about Wallace.
- He was born in Marin.
- Growing up, Wallace’s favorite team was the Oakland A’s and his favorite player was Eric Chavez.
- When asked about the possibility of being drafted by the Giants or A’s before the 2008 draft, he said, “It would be ideal. My family’s still there. But you never know.”
- His favorite movie is “The Natural.”
