UFL team names leaked; San Francisco named after not-so-fierce fish
Oh, UFL, you did it. We challenged you to come up with a great name for your new San Francisco franchise, and you delivered not just a great name, but the greatest name for any team in any sport in the history of everything.
The San Francisco … drumroll rising … Rockfish.
This is only a rumor at this point, but one substantiated by UFL trademark filings. If the filings are accurate, the UFL team names will be the New York Sentinels, the Las Vegas Locomotives, the Orlando Tuskers and the San Francisco Rockfish.
For those of us who aren’t anglers, here are a few Rockfish facts:
- “Rockfish” can refer to several different species.
- They are plentiful off the coast near Point Reyes and the Farallon Islands, where you can take boats with names like Codzilla out to fish them.
- There’s an animated movie coming out next year called “Rockfish” where Vin Diesel plays a guy on an alien planet trying to catch a giant fish. It’s based on this short.
- About a decade ago, rockfish numbers off the California coast dropped dramatically, but strict regulations brough them back up. Now fishermen are limited to a short season and limited hauls.
- Wow, it’s just a terrible name for a football team, isn’t it?
…Other weekend linkage, not including “To Catch a Predator” gone wrong…
Michael Crabtree might hold out for more money from the 49ers using the rationale that he should have been selected higher in the draft. Well, Ryan Leaf should’ve been No. 1 overall, right? See where we’re going with that? Maiocco
Sometimes we forget that the vaunted college football coach with the six-figure salary and the courtesy car is actually a state employee, and will need to take furlough. This means you, Pat Hill. SportsByBrooks
The Giants won’t be trading for Roy Halladay, despite Ryan Sadowski’s total dudely dud today. Merc
Ah, 2009 Summer League. ‘Twas so long ago, we barely remember it. Luckily there’s this Steph Curry Summer League highlight mix to help jog the old memory banks. YouTube
Someday you’ll be able to look back on 2009 as the year the pool jumping started, and SJSU’s Jarron Gilbert was the guy who started it all. Now the guy who jumped into a truck has jumped backwards out of a pool. With Leather
E.T. was a big Kevan Barlow fan, at least according to this photo snapped by Scott Beale at Lauging Squid:
