And a fat man from Sonoma shall lead them
There’s a lot to love about the A’s latest callup, Tommy Everidge, and not just because he weighs 240. Everidge is a 26-year-old career minor leaguer who’s only getting his shot with the big club because Jason Giambi and Daric Barton are broken — and Everidge was hitting a ridiculous .382 in Triple-A before being called up.
If you can get past the Coliseum-bashing (it “felt as intimate as Chattanooga”? Ouch.), this profile in the Press-Democrat lays out everything awesome about Everidge, from winning the MVP for a team he no longer played for to the fact Bob Geren didn’t know anything about him when he was called up last week.
Geren says he looked up Everidge’s minor-league stats as a way to get introduced to a guy who has never been touted as one of the organization’s top prospects.
Everidge went to Sonoma State, not exactly a baseball powerhouse (you remember Marshall Brant and Daniel Barone, right?), and was a 10th-round draft pick before kicking around the minors for five years. But when he finally got up he acted like he’d been here for years: He hit a double off the top of the Green Monster at Fenway to spark a ninth-inning rally that led to an 11th-inning win.
The man who was compared favorably to a house by Dallas Braden might not last much longer with the A’s if Barton and Giambi come back. But the fans have spoken: We want more Tommy Time.
