Don’t panic, Alex Smith fans, if you exist

So, is this ESPN jobber the most misleading headline ever? It should say “Headline writer: Hill likely…” After the 49ers’ game against the Raiders on Saturday, and again in a conference call today, Mike Singletary stressed that he hasn’t chosen the team’s starting quarterback yet. Sure, Alex Smith had a 4.2 passer rating, which made his 22.8 rating in a 2007 game look Montana-esque. But the rating was deceptive and Smith wasn’t terrible, just mediocre, which is exactly what Hill was.

Adam Schefter and every 49ers fan knows Hill will be named the starter eventually. But both quarterbacks have one more chance to look awesomely bland, against the Cowboys on Saturday.

Speaking of, the 49ers have now landed in the middle of the NFL’s hottest controversy. Andy Lee gets his shot to hit the scoreboard at Cowboys Stadium and win a car. Or something. The Cowboys’ new jewel of a stadium has a $40 million video board in the middle of the field that measures 160 feet long and 90 feet high … but hangs low enough that punters are hitting it constantly. Will Lee hit it on Saturday before Jerry Jones can spend the $2 million it will take to raise the board a few feet? We shall see.
