A Penny for your thoughts, pitching rotation

PennyAccording to SI.com’s Jon Heyman, the Giants claimed Brad Penny off waivers today for what amounts to pennies. Roughly 10,000,000 pennies. That makes this a low-risk, potentially high-reward move for Brian Sabean and the Giants, who have watched a revolving door of starters try, and generally fail, to fill the void in the rotation left by Randy Johnson.

Penny struggled for the Red Sox this season, compiling a 5.61 ERA in 24 starts before Boston decided that he didn’t exactly fit into their plans (make the postseason) and placed him on waivers. Perhaps one league’s trash is another league’s treasure. Penny returns to the NL, where he won 94 games in nine seasons with the Marlins and Dodgers.

For what it’s worth, Penny is 16-8 in September and October in his career, his second-best month record-wise. He’s 3-2 in eight postseason starts with a 6.26 ERA, and get this, he’s 14-3 all-time against the Rockies. Don’t think Bruce Bochy won’t take that into account when he’s forced to pick a starting pitcher for that one-game playoff against Colorado after Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain are kidnapped by Dinger.
