For baseball fans whose favorite teams remain in the thick of the playoff hunt — a far more exclusive group before the wild card was created in 1994 — it signifies the official start of one of the most exciting 4 weeks in sports: the stretch run. For everyone else, it marks the return of football — and school.
As the conclusion of San Francisco’s season-long flirtation with the playoffs draws near (an improbable story that is destined to be decided by an even more improbable cast of heroes and villains — will one of them be you, John Bowker?) here’s a look back at 12 of the most exciting pennant races involving the Giants since the franchise moved to San Francisco in 1958 (sorry, Bobby Thompson).
