Strike a pose: Giants call up top prospect

PoseyCardOnly losers, like the Cubs, wait ’til next year. That’s what the San Francisco Giants’ brass finally decided, opting to call up ballyhooed catching prospect Buster Posey Wednesday for the stretch run. With Bengie Molina battling a strained quad and the Giants’ lineup packing about as much punch as a kid’s-sized juice box, the decision makes sense. And yes, he’s eligible for the postseason roster.

Posey, who had 18 home runs, 80 RBI, and a “sexy walk rate” in the minor leagues this season after the Giants made him the No. 5 overall pick in the 2008 amateur draft, is arguably the Giants’ No. 1 prospect. He is poised to become this year’s Pablo Sandoval, in the heat of a wild card race no less. If he is, in fact, the next Kung Fu Panda, he’s going to need a nickname. Poseterize? Maybe if he played for the ‘Dubs. Suggestions are welcomed.

Neither Posey nor Molina is behind the plate tonight. Eli Whiteside gets the honor of catching Brad Penny’s first start as a Giant, an event that we all hope lasts more than a couple of innings. Unlike the signing of Penny, Posey’s promotion generated near unanimous approval from Giants fans. Those who voted “No” probably reside in the greater Los Angeles and Denver areas.
