Patrick Marleau: Maybe traded, certainly not loved by the Sharks

patrick-marleau-san-joseEarlier this summer, the San Jose Sharks revoked Patrick Marleau’s captaincy and dangled it in front of the rest of the team. Then they sent out packages to season ticket holders that had nary a mention of the star. And tonight, ESPN reported that Marleau has been shipped to the division-rival Kings in a three-way deal to bring Dany Heatley to the Sharks. The report was denounced by the GMs of all three teams.

If Patrick Marleau is coming back, the Sharks will need to buy him a few beers, give him a few fist pounds and do the ultimate hug-it-out. And they might need to do that for some Sharks fans, too, because this is getting ridic.

The rumor tonight is that Marleau is off to the Kings, who will send Jarret Stoll and Alexander Frolov to the Senators, who will — finally? — send Heatley to the Sharks. Sportscenter anchor-turned-NHL-columnist John Buccigross is the one reporting it, and seems convinced … on Twitter.

Not convinced are Doug Wilson, Dean Lombardi and Bryan Murray, the three GMs who would theoretically be involved in the deal. Murray, the Senators GM, sent ESPN a text message that said “It is complete bull.” Of course, they could be buying some time until tomorrow’s press conference.

We’re not ordering our Heatley jerseys yet. Or dumping our Marleau jerseys. But we — and surely Marleau — would like to just cut the bull.
