C&E: Sept. 13

CRABS UP

MadBum’s Debut: Tim Lincecum’s bum back opened the door for the MadBum to make his first major league start. While he didn’t factor into the decision, he worked five-plus strong innings, allowing five hits, including two solo home runs, and striking out four.

Beat L.A.: Brad Penny dominated his former team to improve to 3-0 with the Giants, who roughed up Chad Billingsley and pounded out 15 hits after Bruce Bochy canceled batting practice and forbade his team from using the indoor cage.

They’re In This Thing: OK, for real this time, this is the biggest series of the year. Colorado is in town for a 3-game set, the final meeting between the teams’ this season. With 19 games to go, the Giants trail the Rockies by 4.5 games in the wild card race. Stranger things have happened.

CRABS DOWN

Playoff Odds: They’re at less than 3 percent and fast approaching what they were at the beginning of the season, which is to say, no way, no how.

Left for Dead: After the Giants were trounced by the Dodgers on Friday, Bruce Jenkins declared the Giants as good as done. After Saturday’s ugly loss, Henry Schulman did, too.

A Cruel Exercise in Imagination: Derek Jeter a Giant? Oh what might have been.

ELEPHANTS UP:

Offensive Fireworks: The A’s have been absolutely raking since Matt Holliday left. What gives?

Andrew Bailey: Next Sunday is Andrew Bailey t-shirt day at the Coliseum. We’ll soon know whether you can sew a ROY patch onto one of the sleeves.

ELEPHANTS DOWN:

Goodbye, Metrodome: The A’s would like to forget their final game in the Land of the Homer Hanky.

Overly Optimistic: The benefits of the A’s new ballpark may not be as great as the analysis commissioned by the city would lead you to believe.
