C&E: September 20

BASB’s weekly baseball roundup from both sides of the Bay — and an excuse to post a photo of Crazy Crab knocking Stomper off a tricycle.

CRABS UP

The Near Future: Buster Posey collected his first major league hit in an otherwise miserable game Saturday. Posey was also behind the plate for a Madison Bumgarner strikeout in the eighth inning. “That’s our future,” Giants manager Bruce Bochy said after the game.

The Distant Future: The San Jose Giants defeated High Desert, 4-3, to capture the Cal League title. Given that Posey and Bumgarner started the season in Single-A, the future for these young Giants could be sooner rather than later.

CRABS DOWN

Prospect Suspected of Murder: According to a report by the AP, Giants prospect Angel Villalona is the main suspect in the shooting death of a 25-year-old in the Dominican Republic.

Miller Time: Justin Miller, who, outside of a rough couple of nights in Coors Field pitched very well in relief for the Giants this season, was shut down with elbow inflammation.

Sweep Denied: The Giants rallied for three runs in the ninth inning, but fell to the Rockies, 4-3, in the teams’ final meeting of the season. Edgar Renteria took the blame for the loss, a missed opportunity to cut even deeper into Colorado’s wild card lead.

ELEPHANTS UP

The Future: Break up the A’s! On Saturday, Matt Carson got his first major league hit and Brad Kilby earned his first major league win. On Sunday, Oakland won its seventh straight by finishing off a sweep of the Indians. The A’s will continue their pursuit for .500 against the Rangers.

Home Sked: The Red Sox and Yankees will each visit the Coliseum twice next season.

Fake Umps: They came to Oakland, making a September game against the Indians worth watching.

ELEPHANTS DOWN

Giambi: Jason Giambi tells Jeff Fletcher that his struggles in Oakland this season were at least partly a result of being worn down playing so much first base. Enjoy pinch-hitting in Colorado.
