The Senators want their money back
Today, for the Ottawa Senators, redemption is spelled C-A-S-H M-O-N-E-Y. Sens owner Eugene Melnyk has filed a grievance with the league to recoup the $4 million bonus he paid to Dany Heatley over the summer.
Heatley invoked his no-trade clause to veto a deal with Edmonton, thus forcing Ottawa to pay him the bonus on July 1. Heatley was later dealt to San Jose, aka Canadian media exile island.
Apparently Melnyk doesn’t have much hope for actually getting the money back. He just wants his hand on the knife so he can turn it into Heatley’s back.
“I don’t think Melnyk really expects to get his money back,” said a league executive. “I do think he wants to cause Heatley some hardship because he caused plenty of problems for the Senators in the summer.”
Yeah, a grievance. Take that Dany. Wait, what, you’re too busy sipping strawberry daiquiris with Sharkie by the pool at The 88? What. Up.
