My Rookie Season (In Crazy Land): Stephen Curry Reflects on Monta Ellis, Other Silliness

CurryAnd now, the Warriors’ wacky week — it’s only Tuesday!!!! — through the eyes of rookie Stephen Curry, with apologies to GQ.

Now that the Warriors have officially supplanted the Oakland Raiders as the most dysfunctional franchise in all of professional sports, we asked Stephen for an insider’s account of the recent carnage. This week, we’re featuring three posts:

Monday: “Charlotte for Dummies — and My Man, Captain Jack”
Wednesday: “On Defense And Making Promises That I Can’t Keep”
Friday: “I Suddenly Really, Really Wish I Had Stayed at Davidson”

It’s hardly a secret that the Warriors drafted me for my offensive ability. I can flat out shoot the rock, anywhere, anytime. While I can stroke it from distance with the best of them, including my man, Anthony Morrow, no one’s going to confuse me for new acquisition Raja Bell. Except maybe Monta Ellis, who probably couldn’t pick Raja and me out of a lineup that included the two of us and Adonal Foyle.

I know I’ve got a lot of work to do to round out my game, including making improvements on the defensive end. I come up with the occasional steal and I’m willing to take a charge and get dirty, but I don’t have the speed to stick with some of the league’s more explosive guards. For the record, I don’t consider Monta a part of that group, but for him to pop off to the media that this team doesn’t have any good defenders besides himself now that Jax is gone was unfortunate. I mean, if he’s going to tell reporters that he’s not going to put any more of the responsibility on his back and he isn’t going to become more of a vocal leader, he should probably return to his reticent (Davidson vocabulary, baby) ways. He can borrow my mouthguard if need be. Lots of people, including Don Nelson, have been asking me if Monta’s going to be traded, but to be perfectly honest, I haven’t the foggiest idea.

On a somewhat related note, as much as I hate to admit it, I’m not sure I’m going to be able to keep this promise after all. Sorry, Warriors fans. Forget Monta being the self-proclaimed only good defender on the team, I’m one of the few sane people in this place. If this keeps up, I could be the next one to demand a trade. When that happens, you’ll be the first to know. Thanks for reading.

Check back Friday for the next post: “Stephen Curry Suddenly Really, Really Wishes He Had Stayed at Davidson”
